Christmas may have been and gone but the time of spreading joy with gifts isn’t over just yet! The New Year sales traditionally offer a great opportunity for businesses to bag more profit post-Christmas and buyers to grab a few bargains to either treat themselves or get started with their Christmas shopping a little earlier.
But as the world of retail changes, New Year sales are evolving, which means those discounted goodies aren’t always what they seem…
In previous years, consumers would wait on tenterhooks on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day to see a whole host of bargains come their way. But, as the evolution of Black Friday has shown, the time of huge discounts post-Christmas may be a thing of the past.
With the popularity of Black Friday and Cyber Monday growing year-on-year, people are buying more in November. In recent years, the November sales of many online and in-store retailers has surpassed December shopping rates dramatically, with everything from clothing to electrical goods seen at bargain prices and waiting to be snapped up long before the festive season begins.
Many retailers, including big name brands like Primark, Asda and Marks & Spencer, have avoided the use of flash sale events during November in recent years, primarily to even out sales throughout December and into the New Year.
The impact of fast fashion and the throwaway culture many consumers want to leave behind is also seeing retailers change tack in line with buyer expectations. As the cost of living rises, some retailers are going in the opposite direction to satisfy bargain hunting buyers and pick up sales from competitors that are avoiding such events.
The cost of living crisis is another reason why the bargains that we’ve grown used to seeing come the 1st January are few and far between. People’s priorities are shifting as a result.
One thing has endured however; the New Year sees less focus on gifts and more on self-care with people looking to make purchases for themselves, a new job role, a new home or simply a new fitness regime, which means new sales in other areas but not the biggest of bargains.
